Classic Green Bean Casserole
A beloved holiday staple made with tender green beans baked in a creamy mushroom sauce and topped with crispy French fried onions. This comforting casserole is simple enough for a weeknight but iconic on the Thanksgiving table, thanks to its rich flavor, creamy texture, and golden onion crunch.
Ingredients
Main Casserole
- 2 slices bacon, optional
- 1/4 cup finely minced onion, optional
- 1 (10.75-ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon low sodium soy sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste
- 4 cups cooked green beans
- 1 1/3 cups French fried onions, divided
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Prepare a 1.5-quart casserole dish with butter or non-stick spray and set aside.
-
In a skillet, sauté 2 slices of bacon (if using) and 1/4 cup finely minced onion for about 5 minutes, until the onion is tender and the bacon fat has rendered. Pour off excess drippings.
-
Stir in 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup, 1/2 cup whole milk, 1 teaspoon low-sodium soy sauce, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, mixing until smooth.
-
Add 4 cups cooked green beans to the skillet mixture along with approximately 1/4 of the 1 1/3 cups French fried onions. Stir to combine well.
-
Transfer the mixture to the prepared casserole dish and bake at 350°F for about 25 minutes, or until bubbly and heated through.
-
Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining French fried onions over the top.
-
Return the casserole to the oven for about 5 minutes longer, or until the onions are lightly browned and crisp.
Notes
- To double or triple for holidays, adjust pan size and baking time as needed.
- French fried onions can be added generously based on preference.
- For extra flavor, substitute sautéed mushrooms for the optional bacon.
- Dish pairs well with turkey, ham, or roasted chicken.
