The Boss on the John Deere

[Verse 1]

July sunshine, blue Georgia sky.

I came to visit my brother’s farm,
thinking I’d just enjoy the scenery.

Instead, I found myself climbing into the seat
of a big green John Deere.

One round bale was waiting out in the field.

Nobody had to tell me twice.

I fired up the engine,
grabbed the forks,
and headed across the pasture.

Today…
I was running the show.

[Pre-Chorus]

There’s something about sitting behind that steering wheel.

You sit a little taller.

You look a little farther.

You realize this machine is doing exactly what you tell it to do.

[Chorus]

I was the boss on that John Deere,
calling every move,
lifting that round bale like I’d done it all my life.

The cattle saw me coming
and started gathering at the gate.

For those few minutes,
this wasn’t a visit anymore.

This was my farm.

My tractor.

My job.

And I absolutely loved every second of it.

[Verse 2]

I eased the forks under the hay,
lifted it clean off the ground,
and carried it into the feeding area.

The herd followed behind me,
already knowing dinner had arrived.

I set the bale down,
backed away,
and watched them crowd around.

Mission accomplished.

[Bridge]

People think the exciting memories happen
on vacations,
in big cities,
or somewhere halfway around the world.

Sometimes they’re made
on an ordinary July afternoon,

with diesel in the air,

a John Deere beneath your hands,

and the quiet satisfaction
of getting the job done.

[Final Chorus]

I parked the tractor back in the barn,
climbed down,
and couldn’t stop smiling.

Someone asked me if I enjoyed it.

I laughed.

Enjoyed it?

I’d climb back in that seat right now.

Because for one perfect July afternoon,

I wasn’t just visiting the farm.

I was the woman in charge.

And I’d do it again tomorrow.
